Bright Futures, The Annual Fund for Goodenough College

The history of Goodenough College has been one of philanthropy. The construction of London House and William Goodenough House were made possible by the support of far-sighted and generous benefactors around the globe. The values which inspired the original philanthropy endure to this day: our vision remains as important and inspirational as it has been throughout the past eight decades.

The College is an independent charity with no government funding. 80% of our income comes from the rents paid by members which we wish to keep affordable. Philanthropic support provides much needed additional funds to sustain the experiences which make a stay in Mecklenburgh Square so exceptional.

Our 80th Anniversary Appeal was our first coordinated fundraising campaign to alumni worldwide. The response was magnificent. Alumni and friends gave more than £100,000 to the Appeal.

This year we are establishing Bright Futures as an Annual Fund. The funds you give each year will be used without delay. By directing your support towards any of our fundraising priorities you can be certain that your generosity will have an immediate impact. Every gift made to Bright Futures, no matter the amount, will make a difference. Your generosity will enrich members’ experiences of this remarkable community in the heart of London.

Fundraising Priorities -

Activities

Our proximity to the diverse pleasures of London is unrivalled. Access to some of the best seats at the Albert Hall and Wimbledon remains a highlight of College membership. Our wide-ranging extra curricular programme compliments the academic work of our members, and offers something for all. Alumni and current members often describe the experiences gained through being involved in College activities as profound and life-changing.

Your support will help to ensure that we can continue to provide a diverse programme for everyone. Activities to be supported will include lectures, concerts, cultural weeks and the many clubs and societies run by members which cover every aspect of cultural, social, intellectual and sporting life.

Buildings

The beautiful and comfortable surroundings of our buildings are paramount to the Goodenough experience. The College has embarked on a comprehensive refurbishment programme which will modernise them and ensure their maintenance over the long term.

The work has already begun on William Goodenough House. Over the next year, it will be renovated throughout. An extension providing new rooms and flats will be added. Several rooms will be designed for wheelchair users. The reception, common rooms, music and art rooms, and of course, the G Bar will be renewed, ready for future generations.

Our 80th Anniversary Appeal raised almost £60,000 towards the transformation of an overgrown courtyard into a beautiful new garden terrace. With your generous support this year, we hope to secure the remaining £30,000 to ensure that the terrace will be completed for the reopening of the building next year. It is certain to become a much loved facility for the College community.

Bursaries and Scholarships

The College currently provides a limited number of bursaries and scholarships to support members who require financial assistance. However, the demand always outmatches our ability to supply. By giving to this area, your generosity will enable us to meet the financial requirements of many more members allowing them to concentrate on their studies and participate fully in College life.

Greatest Need

By donating to Our Greatest Needs you allow the College to determine where your gift will best enhance the Goodenough experience. Please remember that all gifts, whether large or small make a significant difference. Your generosity will help us to make sure that our members continue to enjoy the many aspects of life on Mecklenburgh Square which make it such a special place.
